By purchasing your own domain name you have your own personalized email address without the use of some other company's name. For example, if your name is John Smith and you purchased the domain name johnsmith.com then your email address can be anythingyouwant@johnsmith.com or instead of johnsmith.com you can register any domain name you want (that isn't already registered of course).
